Wood You Like To Craft September

Today we are sharing our take on Kitchen Decor for September's theme

Make sure to head over and check out the cute Menu Planner that Krystal did yesterday and to see what Melinda and Wendy have up their sleeves for the rest of the week!

This sign about sums up our summer....
Sorry friends!
It was a crazy one~family in town for 8 weeks straight (I'm not kidding either)!
Lot's of trips to several states~Washington, Oregon, Wyoming, Nevada and Utah.
Our first niece got married in St. George Utah (which we fell in love with, it's so pretty down there!).
Here's one of my Instagram's from her reception~aren't they cute!

Lots of fun trips and family made it a summer to remember but unfortunately not a summer for crafting.
Plus guess what landed at my door last weekend~not one but two baby squirrels!
The larger one is about 5 weeks old and the tiny pinkie was maybe a day or 2 old.
Yes, I'm completely sleep deprived from feedings every couple of hours, but they are so fun!

We did get some fun projects done which we'll be sharing in the next few days
and a bunch that we are getting ready to do.
What is it about Fall that brings on my crafting itch?
Do any of you get that way too?

It's good to be back, we've missed you!:)

Bunny Silhouette Pattern

It's been a crazy week for both of us Crafty Sisters~
Candace is busy prepping for teaching a class on Church Nursery ideas
while I've been busy filling Easter orders and putting together my daughter's school yearbook.
I have a whole new appreciation for all the amazing volunteers at schools, PTO's and PTA's!
We've had several email requests for a "pattern" for the cute bunny silhouettes we used last week with Wood You Like To Craft.
So with my low tech computer graphic skills....this is as good as it gets.:)  Yup, a scanned pencil tracing of my patterns.  I know, I need to take a class or something.
You can size the bunnies to any size you like but ours were just about 8" at the tallest and almost 4" wide.
If you don't want to tackle cutting the bunnies yourself, I cut a few sets extra out and listed them in my shop on Etsy.
                          Sweet Pickle Designs
Candace will have some cute ideas to share in the next few days from her class~she gets so nervous about teaching but she's a natural with gathering and sharing ideas.
Now for me, back to organizing year book photos......

September Wood You Like To Craft

Today we are over at Wood You Like To Craft
sharing our take on September's theme
Crafting with/for Kids!

We are always excited for an excuse to do crafts for our kids and with them!
Here's an idea I've wanted to do for a while now!
We thought it would be fun to take one of our favorite shapes and turn it into a
fun chalkboard and jewelry holder, which was perfect for my daughter!
First we found a fun shape we used from a favorite old poster.
This was perfect since it looks just like our favorite kitty Morris~
My daughter has been begging for a kitty shape for a long time now
and I've been wanting to figure out a cute way for her to store all her own necklaces
so they aren't tangled up in my jewelry box....
so this was our perfect fit!
First I made up my pattern and traced it onto 3/4" MDF.
I cut it out with my jigsaw and scroll saw for the finer details.
I then painted it 3 coats worth of chalkboard paint.

I sanded in between coats lightly with a sanding sponge for a smoother finish.
I added 10 tiny hooks that I had spray painted black by pre-drilling holes first along the tail.
The tail was the perfect place for these hooks!
Then finished it off with a hook on the back for easy hanging.
Now I have the perfect place for reminder notes and a perfect place for her own necklaces!
Now I just need to find the perfect spot in her room to hang it up....
Make sure to head over to Wood You Like To Craft to
see what the other gals have been up to!

WYLTC? Growth Charts

Hello!
We are happy to be able to pick this month's Wood You Like To Craft? theme, Growth Charts!  We have wanted to make growth charts for our kids for a long time.  They grow up so fast!

We were inspired by growth charts made by Petite Lemon and Ferm Living.
Our kids are animal lovers and these are perfect.

First we had Home Depot slice up a piece of 1/2 inch mdf, 12 inches wide and 42 inches long.
To create the pennant, we cut with a jigsaw a notch about 2 1/2 inches up from the bottom.
We also glued in grommets into drilled holes to create the official pennant look.

Nicole and her daughter picked what they thought would be my boys' favorite animals and cut the shapes out on 1/8 inch mdf.  They are so cute and the boys love them! We had fun naming all the creatures as we mod podged the papers on.

The majority of the paper we used is from the "Sweet Day" line by Echo Park.

We added a "grow" paper pennant to the top.  This would also be cute with your child's name, but since I have multiple boys, this will do.  We drew the numbers and lines on with a paint pen.

Nicole's daughter is a serious animal lover and especially fond of owls.  (They have owl boxes in their back yard and regularly spot visiting owls. )

Nicole cut and papered an adorable owl along with her daughter's name to go on her growth chart.
She used a cricut to cut the numbers and lines for the ruler along the side.   A vinyl ruler would also be a great option.
We are so happy with how they turned out and we especially love the smaller size.

Come on over this week to Wood You Like To Craft? to see what the other girls build!

Bunny Silhouettes WYLTC

This month we are hosting Wood You Like To Craft
and of course we had to do something Easter/Spring related!
We drew our inspiration from some fun
weather vane type accessories we've seen from Target and Pottery Barn.
We found this great rabbit graphic from The Graphics Fairy.
It was the perfect shape for what we had in mind.
We blew it up to be about 21" wide
and cut it out of 1" pine.
We then gathered our other supplies:
1 7" section of 3/8" dowel
1 chunky table leg from Home Depot
1 cedar fence cap
1 2 3/4" square cut from 1" pine scraps
You can really use anything to build up your base.
Candace used some scraps from her garage and
a ball finial from her son's bunk beds~it's been used
as a weapon being thrown around for a while
so she figured this was a better use for it!;)
After drilling the holes into the bunny and the table leg,
we glued everything together with Gorilla wood glue.
Once dry we stained everything with a coat of stain.
I used Min wax Dark Mahogany Wood Stain,
and Candace used watered down, dark burnt umber acrylic paint.

When it had dried we tried 2 different paint approaches.
I used some cream acrylic paint that was watered down
to a 50/50 consistency, applying a generous coat.
After letting it sit for a few minutes, it was wiped away with paper towel.
This made the grain of the wood pop through and gave the bunny
a nice translucent weathered warm grey look.
Candace applied some furniture wax to her bunny before
she coated it with a thick coat of cream paint.
The wax allowed the brown stain to peek through quite nicely
when she lightly sanded it.

We always love playing around with paint and trying new things out!
Most of all we love playing around with silhouettes!
We're thinking we might have a whole week dedicated to
all things Silhouette.....
We'll see!
Can't wait to see what Krystal, Melinda and Wendy have
coming up in the next few days!
