Nicole and I have been crafting up some egg wreaths! We have about three so far. We thought we would start with this natural looking wreath.
A few days ago I was browsing through some sites I follow. I came across Pretty Little Things For Home. Cindy was making an egg wreath that she was inspired by... from Living With Lindsay. So I headed on over to Living With Lindsay, and discovered Lindsay's favorite egg wreath. Now...Lindsay fell in love with it last year when she saw Kimba post about it. I kept searching and found it was from Urban Farmhouse. They have since changed the look a little.
Did you get that all? :)
The point is I fell in love with the wreath too!
I didn't blog last year, so I didn't get a chance to see it.
It's so rustic...natural...springy...nesty. I had to try it!
Problem is, you need many eggs.
Fake, but real looking eggs are expensive. Especially when you need many.
So, I copied the ladies, by spray painting plastic eggs.
Cindy primed, spray painted, and used craft paint.
I did sponge cream craft paint on after I spray painted. Next I speckled with a toothbrush a mix of brown, dark brown, gray, and black.
Very messy.
Then I dabbed at them. This mixes the colors, and I believe makes them look more natural. Hobby Lobby had plastic eggs half off. So, it was about 32 cents for a pack. Not bad! For papier mache and foam eggs, your looking at 2-4 dollars for a bag a six. I want to make three wreaths, so that wasn't going to work.
We mixed spanish moss, excelsior together and spread all over the grapevine wreath.
We then bound the wreath with brown thread.
I didn't like the color, so we spray painted our wreaths with dark brown paint. I like how dark the grassy stuff is on the Urban Farmhouse wreath and couldn't find anything close enough to it.
I added a few feathers, a bit of moss, and then bound the wreath again with thread.
I hot glued the eggs on. There might be a better way to do this, but it works for me. Cindy put holes in her eggs and wired them on.
I randomly glued them on, following the picture. I like how irregular they are, placed here and there. After I was done placing the eggs on, I glued in a few more tufts of dark spanish moss. Nicole thought the eggs should look like they are nestled in.
We have two more egg wreaths in store and another egg project. Nicole wanted a little more color to hers so if your interested, stay tuned. :)
wow! I'm a picture person, so I first scroll through all the pics. I then scroll back up and read the directions. funny me, I know!
ReplyDeleteI was shocked to see that these were plastic eggs! way to go girl! It looks fabulous! :) I'm loving it! Can't wait to see Nicole's and whatever else you ladies come up with!

Love it--you can barely see the seems in the eggs! I think I will need to make one with light blue eggs.
ReplyDeleteOk, that was supposed to be seams--I was an English teacher.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog! I absolutely LOVE this!!! I had said I didn't really care for decorating with eggs but you totally changed my mind. I think I'll give this project a whirl :) Thank you so much for our great ideas!
ReplyDeletesorry-I meant to say thank you so much for YOUR great ideas!
ReplyDeleteOh, that's awesome! So and I like a natural look of eggs and tiny feathers on the wreath.

Yours turned out great!! I totally thought you went and bought eggs!! I really should have waited until I had darker brown paint and an old (or new toothbrush to use. Using a cheap craft brush didn't yield as pretty eggs. Guess I was just excited to get something on the door. I might have to re-do my eggs this week... Great job!! I can't wait to see the other projects!
ReplyDeleteWOW, that is an awesome project. I love it and might have to take a trip to Hobby Lobby today and pick me up some eggs:) I love the idea of spray painting them. I do have to ask, do they sell the eggs in different sizes? I love how some are big and some are small. Is there a veriety pack? Very cute:)
ReplyDeleteYou had me at the egg wreath. But then I spent the next umpteen minutes scrolling back thru Christmas! Great stuff! I'm wondering, will you share you G'ma's fudge recipe from See's? I'd love to try it!
ReplyDeleteI'll be back!
OH. MY. GOSH.
ReplyDeleteI adore this. ADORE. Wish I had the time and patience to pull one off for my own home.
Pauline,
ReplyDeleteAt Hobby Lobby they had s, m, and large eggs. I'm pretty sure those sizes are everywhere they sell plastic eggs. I did not find a variety pack at Hobby Lobby. Just make sure you prime, or spray paint, and then add the two spongey coats of craft paint. Good luck!
Lisa,
We would love to share our Grandma's fudge recipe. We'll try to do that soon. Thanks for asking! :)
I love your wreath! I never would have guessed those were plastic eggs. Genius!!! Great blog :)
ReplyDeleteThey definitely look real!! I picked eggs from the hens that looked like your eggs!
ReplyDeletePS: Great Job!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sandy! Your comment made me laugh. We made our dad choose his favorite wreath and he liked the one with the "real" eggs, because it reminded him of all the chicken eggs he would gather as a boy. :)
ReplyDeleteI adore your wreath and I like it even better than the one at Urban Farmhouse :) Thanks for your inspiration!!!
ReplyDeleteGORGEOUS! You did an amazing job... those eggs looks SO real! Thanks for sharing at the POPP.
ReplyDeleteI am in LOVE with this and have to make it, once I get it done i will link back and share some love :)
ReplyDeleteI love it! And to think I just got rid of all those annoying plastic eggs. AHHH! Guess I will be running to the store for some more so I can make this. Great job!!!
ReplyDeleteLove this tutorial!
ReplyDeleteThat is a great idea;)
Lovely greetings...
